1394 year in review: Foreign ministers' visits to Iran

Tehran, March 30, The Iran Project – The following timeline lists all foreign ministers' visits to Tehran during the Persian year of 1394 (2015-2016). Arranged in order of time, the timeline may not reflect all of the visits by foreign officials to Iran. In total, more than 30 foreign ministers have visited Iran during last year.
Farvardin (March 21-April 20):



April 18 - Australian FM's trip to Iran

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop was the first foreign minister who officially visited Iran in the year 1394. She held meetings with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif and President Hassan Rouhani, Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) and discussed the expansion of ties, cooperation on fighting ISIL as well as the condition of Iranian refugees in Australia. Speaking at a joint press conference with Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Ms Bishop said she had discussed the Islamic State conflict and asylum seeker issues, as well as human rights.

April 20 - Venezuelan FM trip to Iran

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez visited Tehran to discuss issues of mutual interests as well as key regional and international developments with senior Iranian officials. She held talks with Iranian counterpart, president and oil minister during her state visit.

May 10 - South African FM's trip to Iran

At top of a high-ranking delegation, South African Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane came to Iran to confer with Iranian officials on issues of mutual interests as well as key regional and international developments. Following her Sunday meetings with Iranian officials including Foreign Minister Moammad Javad Zarif and Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani in Tehran, South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoana Mashabane met with President Rouhani earlier on Monday.

July 26 - Turkmenistan FM's visit to Iran

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met his Turkmen counterpart in Tehran on Sunday morning before starting a tour of regional countries. The meeting between Zarif and Rasit Meredow took place in Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport.

July 28 - EU Foreign Policy Chief's trip to Iran

Accompanied by EU political director Helga Schmid, EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini arrived in Tehran on Tuesday, from Saudi Arabia for talks on implementing the JCPOA. Speaking at a joint press conference with Iran’s foreign minister in Tehran with Iranian FM, she said that nuclear deal will have far-reaching effects on Iran, its ties with Europe and the international community and also on the Middle East region. She also held talk with Iranian President, Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani during her stay in Tehran.

July 29 - French FM's trip to Iran

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius arrived in Tehran on Wednesday. This was the first visit by a French foreign minister to Tehran in 12 years.  The French foreign minister held talks with President Hassan Rouhani, his Iranian counterpart Mohammad-Javaz Zarif, Minister of Industries, Mining and Trade Mohammadreza Nematzadeh, Minister of Road and Urban Development Abbas Akhundi and Vice-President and Head of the Department of Environment (DOE) Massoumeh Ebtekar.

August 3 - Serbian FM's trip to Iran

Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic made an official visit to Tehran and met with a number of high-ranking Iranian officials including President Hassan Rouhani, his Iranian counterpart Mohammad-Javaz ZarifAli Larijani, the top Iranian legislator and number of industrial officials during his 3-day stay in Iran.

August 4 - Italian FM's trip to Iran

Italian top diplomat, Paolo Gentiloni arrived in Iranian capital along with the Italian minister of economic development and a group of high-ranking directors of Italian state-run and private companies. He held talks with Iranian officials including Iranian president, Javad Zarif and Ayatollah Rafsanjani, declaring his country’s preparedness to help invest in and transfer of technology to Iran in all fields including the oil and gas industry.

August 4 - Syrian FM's trip to Iran

Walid al-Moallem arrived in Tehran on Tuesday afternoon to meet senior Iranian officials, including President Rouhani and Iran's FM. He also held talks with Iranian top legislation Ali Larijani.

August 23 - British FM's trip to Iran

British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond conferred with Iranian high-ranking officials in his two day official visit to Iran. He met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani as well as his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif. Hammond also reopened the Britain’s embassy in Iran that was stormed by a group of protesters four years ago in a sign of the diplomatic thaw between the two countries.

August 25 - Ghana FM's trip to Iran

Hanna Tetteh, visiting Ghanaian Foreign Minister visited Iran to discuss bilateral relations and further strengthening of ties in all areas. Together with her Iranian counterpart, she took part in a joint press conference in Tehran and met with Iranian president.

September 5 - Czech Republic FM's visit to Iran

Heading a large business delegation, Czech Republic’s Foreign Minister Lubomir Zaoralek and a 70-strong delegation started a visit to Iran by traveling to the central Iranian city of Isfahan and were welcomed by the province’s governor general. Zaoralek said upon his arrival that the delegation was the largest trade delegation he had ever been accompanied with in a foreign visit since taking the office. Apart from visiting Isfahan's local officials, the European minister also met with President Rouhani, Iranian foreign and economy ministers and Iranian top legislator Ali Larijani were among the official's programs in Tehran.

September 7 - Spanish FM's trip to Iran

Accompanied by Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism Jose Manuel Soria and Minister of Public Works Ana Maria Pastor, the Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo visited Tehran to analyze the opportunities for enhancing all-out ties. He also held talks Iran's President Rouhani, Ali Larijani and Zarif during his stay in Tehran.

September 13 - Brazil FM's trip to Iran

Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira arrived in Tehran to improve cooperation with Iran and to confer with Iranian officials on the regional and international developments.

September 20 - Dutch FM's trip to Iran

Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders was another foreign minister who visited Iran after the nuclear deal in attempt to not lag behind other European counterparts. The Dutch foreign minister arrived in Tehran on the invitation of his Iranian counterpart. He held talks with President Hassan Rouhani and other senior Iranian officials including his Iranian counterpart, Iranian parliament speaker and Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani. The solution to the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe and the ongoing regional crises were the topics of two sides' talks.

 October 12 - Japanese FM's trip to Iran

Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida at the head of a politico-economic delegation arrived in Tehran to exchange views on the development of ties with senior Iranian officials. Kishida plans to meet with Iran's president Rouhani and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif to discuss endorsement of a bilateral investment treaty with Iran in a bid to tap into the commercial potential of the Iranian market for Japanese firms.

October 17 - German FM's trip to Iran

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived in Tehran early Saturday to attend the preliminary meeting of the Munich Security Conference slated to be held in the Iranian capital today.

Steinmeier also held meetings with the senior Iranian officials including Iran's president, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, Iranian top legislator Ali Larijani and his Iranian counterpart on recent developments in the Middle East, Syria in particular.

October 17 - Lebanese FM's trip to Iran

Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil arrived in Tehran to discuss bilateral ties and the latest regional developments with Iranian officials. He also conferred with Iranian top diplomat and President Hassan Rouhani on the current situation in Syria, saying “extremism and terrorism have caused great dangers for the Syrian people and the region.

October 17 - Omani FM's trip to Iran

Omani counterpart Yusuf bin Alawi visited Tehran to take part the preliminary meeting of the Munich Security Conference in Tehran. He held talks with his Iranian counterpart on the sidelines of the preliminary meeting of the Munich Security Conference in Tehran to discuss a whole range of issues, including bilateral relations and the latest developments in the region, Syria in particular.

November 9 - Belgian FM's trip to Iran

Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders heading a Belgian economic and political delegation arrived in Tehran on an official visit. He attended a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart and also conferred with President Rouhani, voicing readiness to cooperate with Iran on using peaceful nuclear energy in medical fields. Holding talks with Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani was part of his official visits in Tehran.

November 29 - Greek FM's visit to Iran

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias heading a high-ranking delegation arrived in Tehran to confer with Iranian officials on expanding economic cooperation. During his stay he met with Iran's President RouhaniIranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani and Javad Zarif as well.

December 25 - Mongolian FM's trip to Iran

Foreign Minister of Mongolia Lundeg Purevsuren visited Tehran to discuss issues of mutual interests with Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. Heading the Mongolian delegation, he discussed development and expansion of bilateral ties with his Iranian counterpart. In addition, he met with a number of other senior officials including Iran's oil minister during his visit to Iran.

January 5 - Danish FM's trip to Iran

Danish Minister for Foreign Affairs arrived in Tehran, heading a high-ranking delegation of 60 directors and heads of economic firms. In the two-day visit Mr. Kristian Jensen’s sought to exchange opinions with Islamic Republic of Iran’s political and economic authorities including Iran's President Rouhani, Ali Shamkhani, Ali Larijani and Javad Zarif.

January 6 - Iraqi FM's trip to Iran

Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs Ibrahim al-Jaafari arrived in Tehran to exchange views with the Iranian president on bilateral ties, regional and international developments. He conferred with President Rouhani and Iranian counterpart Mohammad-Javad Zarif on issues of mutual interest, including Saudi Arabian war-mongering policies in the region.

January 13 - Indonesian FM's visit to Iran

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi visited Iran and Saudi Arabia as his President’s especial envoy with a message of peace. She tried to bring about an end to existing tension between Tehran and Riyadh. She held talks with Iran's President and FM during her stay in Iran.

January 24 - Thai FM's trip to Iran

Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs Don Pramudwinai, heading a delegation, was in Tehran to visit Iranian officials. A delegation consisting of 50 people including merchants and Thai companies’ officials accompanied the Foreign Minister. Iran's president Rouhani and Javad Zarif were among the officials whom the Thai FM visited during his presence in Tehran.

February 2 - second German FM's visit to Iran

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier began his negotiations with Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif upon his arrival in Tehran. Steinmeier who headed a politico-economic and media delegation participated in a press conference after his meeting with Zarif. He also met with President Hassan Rouhani, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani and the top security official Ali Shamkhani.

February 20 - Oman FM's trip to Iran

Omani Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi arrived in Tehran to hold talks with the Iranian officials. The visiting Omani foreign minister met with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif and other officials including president Rouhani and Ali Shamkhani, SNSC secretary.

February 22 - Bosnian FM's trip to Iran

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif received his Bosnian counterpart Igor Crnadak who was in Tehran on an official visit. Both partners held a joint press conference on issues of mutual interest as well as regional and international issues in the capital Tehran.

February 29 - Romanian FM's trip to Iran

Romanian Foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu visited Tehran to exchange views on diplomatic relations and cooperation on issues of mutual interests. Comanescu met with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, President Hassan Rouhani, Ali Larijani as well as Minister of Petroleum and Minister of Finance and Economy.

March 6 - Malta Foreign Minister's trip

George Vella , Maltese Foreign Minister visited Tehran to conferred with Iranian officials on bilateral ties. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarit met with Maltese counterpart George Vella and held a joint presser in the capital Tehran.
