Iran Majlis to hold Syria conference

Irans parliament (Majlis) is to host the second international conference on the situation of human rights and measures to further empower resistance movements in Syria.
Hossein Sheikholeslam, who advises Speaker of Parliament Ali Larijani on international affairs, said the conference is scheduled for June 1 in Tehran.

He said chairmen of foreign policy committees from parliaments in 25 countries are to attend the event, whose first conference was held on March 12.

The conference in Tehran will be held ahead of the June 3 presidential election in Syria.

On Thursday, Syrian citizens staged rallies and held meetings to express support for the government, the countrys armed forces as well as the upcoming presidential election in Syria.

The events were held in the western city of Idlib and a number of small towns in the northeast of the Arab country, where participants praised President Bashar al-Assad for leading the nation during one of its most difficult times in its recent history.

There are three candidates in Syrias presidential election, namely incumbent President Assad and Maher Abdel Hafiz Hajjar and Hassan Abdallah al-Nuri.

According to Syrias Interior Ministry officials, nearly 16 million Syrians are eligible to vote in the election.

Damascus says it would hold the presidential poll despite the foreign-backed militancy, which has, according to some sources, killed over 150,000 people and displaced millions of others since it erupted in March 2011.
