Iran to ban smartphone application WhatsApp
President Rouhani announced the decision after Facebook owner Zuckerberg bought the application.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has announced that his government is banning the smartphone application WhatsApp after it was purchased by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Rouhani cited his reason for the ban being the $19 billion purchase of the application by Zuckerberg, who he called "an American Zionist," Fox News reported on Friday.

The Iranian president comments have led many to expect that Facebook and similar social media websites may also be banned soon.

Iran's Committee on Internet Crimes chief Abdolsamad Khoramabadi said there were no current plans to block any sites besides WhatsApp, but didn't rule out further discussions about banning other social media tools in the future.

The Fox News article was poorly written this is poorly ripped off it. Rouhani did not order or announce the ban, and he definitely didn't say the "Zionist" line, Khoramabadi did. IRNA reported that comm. minister says (Rouhani) Gov. opposes ban.

ali ahmadi, Khoramabadi is the secretary of the Committee for Determining Criminal Web Content which banned WhatsApp and some months ago WeChat in Iran. The same committee is still undecided about regulating/banning Viber (an Israeli product), Tango, and Instagram (which is also owned by Facebook) in Iran. For Iranians there are many alternatives to WhatsApp and Viber such as KakaoTalk and Nimbuzz.
