British Foreign Office Political Director Simon Gass is in Tehran to hold talks with senior Iranian officials.
Iran痴 Deputy Foreign Minister for European and American affairs, Majid Takht-e Ravanchi said on Monday that Gass, who represents UK in the nuclear talks between Iran and the P5+1 group, is scheduled to discuss 澱ilateral and international issues with several Iranian officials during his one-day visit.
Iran and Britain agreed in October 2013 to appoint non-resident charg駸 d誕ffaires as a first step toward reopening their respective embassies. On December 3, Britain痴 new non-resident charge d'affaires to Iran Ajay Sharma visited Tehran. Later in the month, Mohammad Hassan Habibollahzadeh, Iran痴 non-resident charg d誕ffaires to Britain, arrived in London.
The development followed a September meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and British Foreign Secretary William Hague in New York, during which they discussed ways to improve Tehran-London ties based on mutual respect.
On November 13, Britain declared the decision to revive diplomatic ties with Iran by appointing a non-resident charge d'affaires.
On November 19, British Prime Minister David Cameron also held a phone conversation with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, in the first such call between a UK premier and an Iranian president in more than a decade, and discussed, among other issues, the resumption of bilateral relations with the Iranian chief executive.
