TEHRAN (Tasnim) A new shipping route between the Iranian southwestern city of Khoramshahr and the Iraqi port city of Basra will come into service for a temporary period as early as April 21, an Iranian official announced.The new route will enable the Iranian and Iraqi nationals to easily travel between Khoramshahr and Basra over a span of 15 days, Majid Sajdeh, an official with Irans Valfajr shipping company announced.
The route will then turn into a permanent one to provide year-long services for civilian shipping industry if the number of passengers reach a sensible number.
Khoramshahr is a port city located in Irans southwestern province of Khuzestan, which extends to the right bank of the Arvand Rud River (also known as Shatt al-Arab in Iraq).
And Basra is located in southern Iraq on the Arvand Rud. It is also known as the Arab countrys main port.
The distance between Khoramshahr and Basra is some 36 kilometers (about 22 miles, equal to about 20 nautical miles).
