The Iranian coroners office says 6,455 people have been killed in road accidents over the past five years during the holidays around Norooz, the Iranian New Year that begins on March 21.
The Tasnim News Agency reports that the fatalities peaked during the 2010 Norooz holidays, with 1,391 people killed in road accidents.
The statistics refer to the 20-day period that starts five days before the beginning of spring and ends on the 15th day of the New Year.
Iran has one of the worlds highest rates of road accidents and related fatalities.
