Greek foreign minister to visit Iran for talks

Greek Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos is due to arrive in Iran to hold talks with Iranian officials on the expansion of bilateral ties between Athens and Tehran.

Venizelos, heading a high-ranking politico-economic delegation, will arrive in the Iranian capital on Friday for an official visit.

He is slated to meet with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif and President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday.

On Sunday, he will hold talks with Chairman of Irans Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani as well as Secretary of Irans Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani.

On January 23, Venizelos praised the deal struck between Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council - Russia, China, France, Britain, and the US - plus Germany in Geneva in November 2013 over Irans peaceful nuclear program, terming the implementation of the agreement by both sides as a positive and promising measure, which, he said, Athens welcomes.

He described the sincere and principled talks between the two parties involved in the talks as necessary for the resolution of the standoff.

On January 12, Iran and six other countries finalized an agreement on ways to implement the interim nuclear deal that the two sides had struck in Geneva on November 24, 2013. The accord, which went into effect on January 20, is aimed at setting the stage for the full resolution of the decade-old standoff over Irans nuclear energy program.
