Irans Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has called for stronger cooperation between Tehran and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).Zarif stressed the necessity of expanding cooperation with the SCO in a Tuesday meeting with SCO Secretary General Dmitry Mezentsev in Tehran, saying the Islamic Republic and members of the organization share common interests.
Pointing to Iranian President Hassan Rouhanis first foreign trip after taking office to Kyrgyzstan in September 2013 to participate in the SCO summit, Zarif highlighted the important position of the SCO as a regional and international organization.
The Iranian foreign minister expressed Tehrans readiness for more cooperation with the SCO members in the fields of economy, trade, energy, transit and fight against terrorism.
Mezentsev, for his part, assessed his visit to Tehran as positive, saying his trip is aimed at further enhancing SCO-Tehran ties.
He also hailed Irans peaceful nuclear achievements, expressing hope for further progress of talks between Iran and the six major world powers over Tehrans nuclear energy program.
The SCO is an intergovernmental security organization founded in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Iran, India, Mongolia, Afghanistan and Pakistan have an observer status at the organization.
