Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has underscored the need for enhancing Irans cooperation with Saudi Arabia with the aim of restoring security to the Middle East.Commenting on a question about Tehran-Riyadh relations in a Sunday panel at the Munich Security Conference (MSC), Zarif noted that Iran and Saudi Arabia both share a common goal which is the achievement of regional security.
However, Zarif cautioned his Saudi counterpart that regional security will not be achieved through supporting terrorism.
He said Tehran and Riyadh can cooperate to safeguard the security of the Persian Gulf and noted that Iran can maintain proper relations with Saudi Arabia as it is the case with Turkey and Qatar.
The foreign minister pointed to the changes in Irans policies following the election of President Hassan Rouhani and said Tehran seeks constructive cooperation with the global community based on mutual respect and the country has started the process with its neighbors.
He pointed to Tehrans efforts to enhance ties with neighboring states such as Turkey, the UAE, Oman and Kuwait and expressed hope that constructive negotiations will start in the future with other neighbors, including Saudi Arabia.
Zarif said work is needed in Irans domestic policies, including human rights, pointing out that the same efforts are needed in many other countries across the world.
Touching upon the Syrian crisis, the Iranian foreign minister called for concerted efforts to put an end to the bloodshed in the country.
Zarif reaffirmed Irans support for ceasefire in Syria and sending humanitarian aid to Syrians.
