An Iranian deputy foreign minister has condemned the US decision to resume sending arms to foreign-backed militants in Syria as totally wrong.
Arming �irresponsible armed groups will not help to end the ordeal of the Syrian people,� Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian stated on Wednesday.

Amir Abdollahian added that had there existed a military solution to the Syria crisis, the conflict would have ended in the past three years.

He also said Washington's contradictory behavior while the Syria peace talks are still underway in Switzerland shows that the White House has no plans to help end the Syria crisis.

The Iranian official insisted that the Syrian issue can be resolved only through democratic means.

On January 22, the Geneva II conference on Syria, which is aimed at finding a political solution to the crisis in the country, kicked off in the Swiss town of Montreux and resumed after a one-day break in Geneva.

UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi on Wednesday acknowledged a "quite large" gap between rival sides in the conference, but noted that the ice between the opposition and the Syrian government was �breaking slowly.�

The so-called Syrian National Council and its Western supporters insist that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad must step down and a transitional government be formed in the country.

But Damascus rejects the demand, arguing that it is not included in the communiqu� issued after an earlier round of international talks in June 2012. The document has been announced as the basis of the ongoing talks.

The Syrian government also argues that the foreign-backed coalition does not represent the Syrian opposition.
