President: Grounds prepared for reaching final nuclear agreement

Tehran, Jan 28, IRNA President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday that grounds are currently prepared to reach a final nuclear agreement and comprehensive solution with the other side in the short term if there is a firm determination to this end.
President Rouhani made the remarks in a meeting here with the visiting former Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan who is here at the head of a high-ranking delegation.

Annan is on a visit to Tehran at the head of a group of ex-global leaders known as the Elders consisting of former Finnish President and Nobel prize winner Martti Oiva Kalevi Ahtisaari, Nobel Prize winner, peace activist and one of the anti-apartheid leaders in South Africa Desmond Tutu and former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo.

?Iran seeks nothing beyond its rights based on the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)? said the President.

He stressed ?Tehran?s all nuclear activities have been peaceful and will remain so.?

He stressed that regional crises ?are mostly the results of cultural and economic poverty as well as lack of justice and democracy and presence of foreign troops in the region and foreign interference.

?Violence, extremism and terrorism are major problems of the region which will add to the international concerns along with injustice, lack of democracy, racial and sexual discriminations and lack of a proper interpretation of human rights,? President Rouhani stressed.

Referring to the World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) proposal which was raised by him during his address to the UN Disarmament Conference in New York on September 25, 2013, President Rouhani said all world nations and Elders had to help in implementing the proposal.

On December 18, 2013, President Rouhanis W A VE proposal was overwhelmingly ratified at the UN General Assembly with 190 votes.

The WAVE Act calls on all nations across the globe to denounce violence and extremism.

He also stressed the need for a united international move to stop ruthless massacre of people in Syria, noting that the most important step to this end is to stop supporting and arming terrorist groups in Syria.

President Rouhani urged ?certain regional states? to stop providing arms and supporting terrorist groups in Syria.?

Annan said, for his part, that world countries should find a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis.

To this end, Annan added, the United Nations Security Council and neighboring states of Syria, Iran in particular, could play an effective role.
