Lebanon FM hails Iran-proposed UN WAVE resolution

Lebanon's caretaker foreign minister has hailed the Iranian presidents proposal of World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) which was unanimously endorsed as a UN resolution.

Adnan Mansour said on Friday that the proposal was a positive and active gesture, saying it contributes to convergence of world countries to adopt a clear policy on fighting terrorism, violence and extremism.

He also described the fight against terrorism, violence and extremism as an international responsibility.

Mansour added that international terrorism has targeted Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Yemen, Algeria, Russia and other countries.

He stated that the international community and countries victimized by terrorism must team up and counter the scourge through cooperation, and formulate necessary strategies for fighting terrorism.

On December 18, 2013, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly voted to approve Iranian President Hassan Rouhanis WAVE proposal, which calls on all nations across the globe to denounce violence and extremism.

Mansour stressed the need for Irans presence in the forthcoming Geneva II Conference on Syria, scheduled to be held on January 22, noting that the involvement of the Islamic Republic in the event will boost its credit while Irans absence will signify the failure of the talks.

He said the absence of Iran in the upcoming Syria confab will hurt the fundamentals of the event, noting that for the Geneva II conference to be fruitful, all influential powers must be invited without any discrimination.

Syria has been gripped by deadly crisis since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey - are supporting the militants operating inside the country.
