Advisor: Syria's 3-year-long bloody crisis result of west's lack of prudence

TEHRAN (FNA)- The western states must be accountable for the pertinacious and biased supports they have extended to Syria's extremist groups whose threats have now endangered peace and tranquility in the entire region, an adviser to the Iranian parliament speaker said.

Speaking on Monday, Advisor to the Iranian Parliament Speaker Hossein Sheikholeslam stressed the importance of countering extremism and terrorism in Syria since the outbreak of the crisis three years ago.

However, western countries would not accept it. Now, after three years of criminal acts, and the spread of terrorism and the ominous phenomenon of extremism, westerners have reached the same conclusion, the Iranian official stated.

Sheikholeslam said this approach makes Iran an important part of the Syrian crisis settlement and makes it unlikely that the conference will yield results without Tehran.

He added that western powers, certain regional countries and the US, which were involved in nurturing terrorism in Syria, have now come to the conclusion that they must counter terrorism.

The conflict in Syria started in March 2011, when sporadic pro-reform protests turned into a massive insurgency following the intervention of western and regional states.

The unrest, which took in terrorist groups from across Europe, the Middle-East and North Africa, has transpired as one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history.

As the foreign-backed insurgency in Syria continues without an end in sight, the US government has boosted its political and military support to Takfiri extremists.

Washington has remained indifferent to warnings by Russia and other world powers about the consequences of arming militant groups.
