An Iranian deputy foreign minister has urged Lebanese officials to investigate the death of Majed al-Majed, the mastermind of the November 2013 bombing attack on Irans Embassy in Beirut.Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdullahian on Saturday stressed the necessity of investigating the circumstances surrounding al-Majeds death by Lebanese officials.
A Lebanese army statement said on Saturday that al-Majid had died in a military hospital in Beirut earlier in the day, while receiving medical treatment for kidney failure.
The Lebanese army said on Friday that Al-Majed, whose identity was confirmed by DNA testing, had been on Saudi Arabia's most wanted list since 2009.
Lebanese caretaker Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn said on Wednesday that the intelligence services of the Lebanese army had arrested the Saudi commander of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, an al-Qaeda offshoot that operates throughout the Middle East.
The group is responsible for the twin bomb attacks against the Iranian Embassy in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on November 19 which killed 25 people and injured more than 150. Irans Cultural Attach to Beirut Hojjatoleslam Ebrahim Ansari and the wife of another Iranian diplomat were among the victims.
Majed is a high-profile terrorist also wanted by the US and some other countries. He had earlier traveled to Syria to pledge his allegiance to the notorious al-Nusra Front, which is fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
