TEHRAN, Dec. 15 (MNA) 17 years after a woman became the mayor of Tehrans 7th Municipality district, now more women are mayors in other cities.
Maryam Pakzad was the first woman who recently had won the limelight. She won the vote of 5 fourth City Council members in Loulman, Guilan Province, and became the youngest mayor of the province.
In a few days, the name of another woman, this time Samiah Baluch Zehi, a girl of 26, single, of Kalat City, the center of Sarbaz, Sistan and Baluchistan Province, who is from the majority Sunni population, was elected as the city mayor.
Zahra Sadr Azam Nouri was the first woman mayor of the Islamic Republic of Iran. She was appointed by Gholam Hossein Karbaschi, then the mayor of Tehran, as mayor of Tehrans 7thMunicipality District in 1996.
In 2004, in a central city of Saveh, this was Maryam Roustayi Gerayloo who was decided upon by the city council as the mayor, a position she held until 2006.
Elaheh Mavalizadeh, the mayor of Ahvaz 2ndMunicipality District was appointed to this position in 2008. She is the lecturer of Department of Economic and Social Sciences in Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz and former City Council member.
Mashhads 6thMunicipality District also had a woman mayor. Sharareh Madanian was appointed by Mashhad mayor of the time in 2006 and assumed office in the 6thdistrict.
In Tabriz, municipality had experienced a woman manager. Shifteh Badr Azar, with an MA in City Planning, was the deputy for City Planning of Tabriz 7thMunicipality District.
Shokoufeh Shahabipour was another woman who sat on a mayors seat when she was only 23 and a student of Architecture in Bandar Abbas Khalije Fars University.
