40 killed in north Yemen clashes: Report

At least 40 people have been killed in three days of clashes between Salafi militants and Houthi fighters in Yemens northern province of Saada, a report says.
The latest clashes erupted in the town of Damaj on Wednesday and lasted for three days.

The casualties were all Salafis and that at least 200 more people had been wounded during the fighting, Salafi spokesman Abu Ismail al-Hajouri told Reuters on Friday.

There was no independent account of the clashes and no immediate report of any Houthi casualties.

Damaj has been the scene of the bloody clashes between Houthi fighters and Salafi groups in the province of Saada in recent weeks.

Houthis, a Shia group led by Sheikh Abdel-Malek al-Houthi, said in a Wednesday statement said that the Salafi groups are igniting strife in the region by bringing thousands of foreign fighters to Damaj.

Yemens Shia Houthi movement draws its name from the tribe of its founding leader Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi.
