File photo shows an al-Qaeda militant in Yemen.[/caption]Yemeni security forces have captured "one of al-Qaeda's most dangerous members" in the southeastern part of the country, a report says.
"The arrested terrorist Omar Salem is involved in the assassination of the deputy head of the military college General Ali bin Freyjan" who was assassinated earlier this month, a military official told Yemens state news agency Saba on Tuesday.
The official said Salem was nabbed in Ghayl Bawazir in the southeastern province of Hadramawt after authorities received information about his location.
Al-Qaeda has an active presence in Yemen, the ancestral home of Osama bin Laden, despite government efforts to fight the network. The group was blamed for the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Aden that killed 17 American sailors and the attack on a French oil tanker that killed one person two years later.
Al-Qaeda loyalists have carried out a spate of deadly attacks against Yemeni security forces since dictator Ali Abdullah Salehs successor, President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, came to power in February 2012.
