'German, EU parliamentary delegations due in Iran'

An Iranian lawmaker says parliamentary delegations from Germany and the European Union (EU) are set to pay official visits to Tehran.
Hossein Sobhani-Nia said on Wednesday that the delegations will visit Iran either in mid-October or early November to hold talks with senior Iranian officials.

In October 2012, a four-member German parliamentary delegation travelled to Iran for a six-day visit, despite pressure from pro-Israeli groups to cancel the trip.

The delegation was headed by Bijan Djir-Sarai, an Iranian-born member of the German center-right Free Democratic Party (FDP). He was accompanied by Thomas Feist, a member of German Chancellor Angela Merkels Christian Democrats (CDU) party, Angelika Graf of the opposition Social Democrats (SPD), and Green Party deputy Kerstin Muller.

The delegates discussed the grounds for the enhancement of cultural, economic and parliamentary ties between Tehran and Berlin in their meeting with Iranian legislators.

They also held talks with other senior Iranian officials, including former Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Mohammad Mehdi Akhoundzadeh, Chairman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdi, and Secretary of Iran's High Council for Human Rights Mohammad Javad Larijani.
