Turkey Kurds clash with police again

Turkish police have once again clashed with Kurdish protesters demonstrating against government reforms in the southeastern province of Cizre.
Police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the demonstrators during the clashes on Wednesday. The protesters also responded by using petrol bombs and fireworks.

Kurds in southeastern Turkey say the reforms introduced by the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan are not enough.

The protests initially began on October 7.

Under the reform package, Kurdish-language education will be permitted in private schools and electoral candidates will be allowed to campaign in Kurdish.

The reforms will also ease rules preventing pro-Kurdish and other smaller parties from entering the parliament. Certain towns will also have their previous Kurdish names back.

In March, jailed leader of Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) Abdullah Ocalan declared a ceasefire after months of talks with the Turkish government.

In return, the PKK asked for reforms to the penal code, electoral laws and the right to education in the Kurdish language and a degree of regional autonomy.

Last month, the PKK accused the Turkish government of failing to deliver on the promise of reforms.
