Saudi Arabia calls for more support for Syria militants

Saudi foreign minister has called for more support for Syrias foreign-backed militants to change the balance of power on the ground.
Prince Saud al-Faisal made the comments as the so-called Friends of Syria group held a meeting on the sidelines of the 68th United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York on Thursday.

The United States, Britain, Germany, France, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar are the leading members of the group.

Meanwhile, numerous Syrian militant groups fighting against the government have publicly denounced the so-called Syrian National Coalition leaders currently meeting other world leaders at the United Nations.

Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia guaranteed to continue its financial and logistic support for the militants, including terrorist al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front, during a meeting held in the Jordanian capital Amman.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

According to the UN, more than 100,000 people have been killed and a total of 7.8 million of others displaced due to the violence.
