Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says confessions from foreign-backed militants in Syria suggest that they used chemical weapons in recent fatal attacks.During an interview with Venezuelas state-run network Telesur, Assad said militants had confessed to bringing chemical weapons into Syria and that the Syrian army had discovered chemical weapons caches and labs belonging to the terrorists.
President Assad added that evidence handed over to Russia proved the militants were responsible for the attack on August 21 near the capital, Damascus.
The Syrian president also said that Damascus was committed to a Russia-US agreement under which Syria would see its chemical weapons eliminated.
Assad said that experts from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) would look into the status of these weapons in Syria.
There is always the possibility that the terrorists will obstruct the work of the experts by preventing them from accessing certain places, Assad stated.
The militants operating inside Syria and the foreign-backed Syrian opposition claim that the Syrian army carried out the fatal attack in August. However, Damascus strongly rejects the allegation and says the militants carried out the assault to draw in foreign intervention.
President Assad also pointed to another attack near the northwestern city of Aleppo and said, We are the ones who invited them [UN chemical weapons experts] to come to Syria in March when the terrorists used poison gas in a suburb of the city of Aleppo.
