A senior Iranian military official says the United States has backed down from its tough positions vis--vis the Islamic Republic.The Americans have noticeably opted for a kind of flexibility and to retreat vis--vis Iran, Major General Yahya Rahim Safavisaid on Wednesday, referring to US President Barack Obamas speech to the UN General Assembly a day before.
It seems that the Americans have realized that Iran is a powerful and stable country in the region, which follows a reasonable and intelligent method in dealing with its enemies, said the general who advises Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on military affairs.
Safavi said the US president has for the first time declared that Washington does not seek regime change in Iran and that he respects Irans right to access to peaceful nuclear energy.
Obama said on Tuesday that he a diplomatic solution to its disputes with Iran, noting that resolution of Iran nuclear issue can bring about a possible thaw in frosty relations between the two countries.
The US president also referred to Ayatollah Khameneis fatwa against the development of nuclear weapons.
He also admitted that distrust between Iran and the US is deep-rooted, referring to the US interference in Irans internal affairs in the past, including the 1953 overthrow of Iran's popular prime minister Mohammad Mosaddeq.
The United States, Israel, and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.
Iran rejects the allegation, arguing that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
In addition, the IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran's nuclear facilities but has never found any evidence showing that the Iranian nuclear program has been diverted toward military objectives.
