At least 16 people have been killed and 15 others injured after two bombs exploded inside a Sunni mosque near the Iraqi city of Samarra, north of Baghdad.The bombs hit the Musab bin Omair Mosque as worshippers entered for Friday Prayers.
The blasts also caused damage to the mosque and nearby buildings.
No group has claimed responsibility for the bombings.
The attack comes a day after leaders of Iraqs political groups signed an agreement, known as the Charter of Honor and Social Peace, to end the violence in the country.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi and leader of Supreme Islamic Council Seyyed Ammar al-Hakim were among the signatories to the agreement.
The charter was introduced by Iraqi Vice President Khodair al-Khozaei in May in an effort to maintain national unity and protect the country from sectarian violence.
Violence has surged across Iraq in recent months, reaching its highest level since 2008.
According to the United Nations, more than 5,000 people have been killed in acts of violence so far this year in Iraq, 800 of them in August alone with Baghdad province worst hit.
July was Iraq's deadliest month in five years with 1,057 people killed and 2,326 wounded in terrorist attacks.
The Iraqi government says al-Qaeda-linked groups and members of the outlawed Baath party are behind the surge in terrorist attacks in the country.
