TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Iraqi Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi in a meeting in Tehran reiterated the need for a political solution to the Syrian crisis.During the meeting, Zarif and al-Nujaifi warned against the repercussions of any military intervention in Syria.
Zarif pointed to the ongoing crisis in Syria, and said, The consequences and dangers of promoting extremism and sectarian conflict will not be limited to the regional countries, and will engulf other countries in around the world if this ominous phenomenon is not seriously dealt with.
He reiterated that only Israel would benefit from any military adventurism in the region.
Zarif added that warmongers have not been able to achieve their objectives over the past century, saying, I hope all countries will come to the understanding that issues cannot be resolved by resorting to war and [adopting] unilateral measures.
Al-Nujaifi, for his part, stressed the importance of continuous consultation between regional countries, including Iran and Iraq, and expressed the hope that their collective efforts could restore peace in Syria as well as the whole region.
Al-Nujaifi, heading a parliamentary delegation, arrived in Tehran on Saturday at the invitation of his Iranian counterpart Ali Larijani.
The conflict in Syria started in March 2011, when sporadic pro-reform protests turned into a massive insurgency following the intervention of western and regional states.
The unrest, which took in terrorist groups from across Europe, the Middle-East and North Africa, has transpired as one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history.
As the foreign-backed insurgency in Syria continues without an end in sight, the US government has boosted its political and military support to Takfiri extremists.
Washington has remained indifferent to warnings by Russia and other world powers about the consequences of arming militant groups.
