A high-ranking Yemeni security official has escaped an assassination attempt in the south of the country, authorities say.Late on Sunday, the convoy of Colonel Abdul-Hafdh al-Skaf, the commander of special security forces in Aden, was targeted by a bombing attack, which left no casualties, Xinhua quoted a local government official as saying on condition of anonymity.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the failed assassination attempt, which damaged some of the vehicles.
A local military intelligence officer confirmed the attack later, saying, "Al-Skaf escaped an apparent assassination when his convoy was struck by a roadside bomb near Aden's international airport."
On August 31, Yemeni Prime Minister Mohammed Salim Basindawa escaped an assassination attempt by unknown gunmen, who opened fire on his convoy in the capital Sanaa.
In December 2012, a similar attack was carried out and two armed men killed Lieutenant Colonel Mutei Baqatyan, a member of the countrys state security, in the city of Mukalla in southern Yemen.
Major General Ahmed was also seriously injured in a car bomb attack that targeted his motorcade in the heart of Sanaa in September 2012, and killed 12 people.
Yemeni security forces frequently come under attack by gunmen especially in the southern and eastern parts of the country.
