At least 26 people have been killed and several others wounded in a series of bomb explosions that hit Iraqi cities, security officials say.Four car bombs went off in and around the central city of Hilla in the worst incident of violence on Sunday, killing at least 16 people and wounding dozens more.
A car bomb in the Waziriyah neighborhood of Baghdad also killed at least three people and injured eight others on the same day.
At least seven people were killed and dozens more wounded in similar attacks in the cities of Karbala, Kut, Nasiriyah, Hafriyah, Abu Ghraib and Mosul.
The attacks came a day after at least 26 people lost their lives and 45 others sustained injuries in a bomb attack in Iraqs northern province of Nineveh.
On Friday, 30 people were killed in two bomb explosions near a mosque in the northern city of Baquba.
Violence has surged across Iraq in recent months, reaching its highest level since 2008.
According to the United Nations, more than 800 people were killed across Iraq in various acts of terrorism in August alone.
The Iraqi government says al-Qaeda-linked groups and members of the outlawed Baath party are behind the surge in terrorist attacks in the country.
