Amid a recent report about the US lethal aid for militants in Syria, a retired Lebanese general says the rebels in the Arab country may receive air defense missiles for the first time,�Press TV�reports.
�I do believe that they (the US and its allies) will provide maybe for the first time air defense missiles like SAM-7 and Stinger because they believe that the Syrian regime has superiority in the air force,� Hisham Jaber said.
�Since they could not hit and strike the air force in Syria, they will provide and they started to provide the insurgents by Stingers and SAM-7,� he added.
He stated that the quantity of the weapons and their receivers are not clear yet.

The analyst expressed confidence that if such weapons will be in the hands of extremist organizations like al-Nusra and similar other groups, �Western bloc and America and its allies France and Britain� will have problems with their public opinion.

Head of the so-called Syrian National Council (SNC) media office Khalid Saleh said on Friday that the group has received lethal aid from the United States to launch more attacks against the Syrian government.

He added that Washington has decided to enhance assistance to the foreign-backed militants in Syria.

Jaber further stated that the foreign-backed militants in Syria are also provided with sophisticated communications means.

�Also maybe they will provide them by a system which can jam the communication of the Syrian armed forces,� the general said.

According to a report by the�Washington Post�on Wednesday, weapons funded by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) began reaching the militants in Syria.

�The shipments began streaming into the country over the past two weeks,� said the report, which was confirmed by a US official later.

"That is something we are not going to dispute, but we are not going to publicly speak to it," the official said.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.

In a recent statement, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said the number of Syrian refugees who have fled the country�s 29-month-long conflict has reached two million.

The UN refugee agency further said some 4.2 million people have also been displaced inside Syria since the beginning of the conflict in the Arab country.
