Iran urges West to seek diplomatic settlement of Syria crisis

Irans Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has urged the West to seek a political settlement of the crisis in Syria and fend off war and violence in the region.
Zarif made the remarks in a meeting with new Swiss Ambassador to Iran Giulio Haas on Wednesday, when the Swiss diplomat submitted his credentials to the Iranian foreign minister.
In the meeting, Zarif expressed hope the West would try to ward off the specter of war in the region and work toward resolving the Syria crisis through diplomacy in light of the new Russian proposal to Syria that asks it to put its chemical arms under international control.
The top Iranian diplomat also touched upon the good relations between Tehran and Bern, emphasizing that both countries have enormous potential to forge closer cooperation, especially in the fields of economy and trade.

Describing Switzerland as an influential country in the international community, Zarif expressed hope that, with the new Iranian administration in office, interaction between Iran and European countries, including Switzerland, will further expand.

Ambassador Haas, for his part, conveyed warm greetings to Zarif on behalf of Swiss Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter, calling for the promotion of bilateral ties, particularly in economic and trade areas.

The Iranian foreign minister also received outgoing Omani and Cypriot ambassadors to Tehran, bidding them farewell and expressing interest in building on the existing good relations to further improve mutual political and economic ties.

Additionally, Zarif received the new Dutch ambassador to Iran, who submitted his credentials to the Iranian foreign minister on Wednesday.

The Dutch diplomat expressed hope that reciprocal ties will further expand during the tenure of the new Iranian administration.
