TEHRAN (Tasnim) The US will suffer greater losses in case of military strike on Syria compared to its losses in Afghanistan and Iraq, an Iranian lawmaker warned, as there are mounting concerns US military action could draw the US into a prolonged war and spark broader hostilities in the region.
The US suffered losses due to launching military attacks in Afghanistan and Iraq, its prestige was badly dented, and it entangled itself in wars of attrition, Mohammad Hossein Farhangi told Tasnim News Agency on Sunday.
He referred to the strong opposition of the world nations against the US military intervention in Syria, saying, If the US unwisely launched such an attack it would definitely have to shoulder its aftermaths and negative consequences.
Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei had earlier underlined that military intervention in Syria will be harmful to the US, and noted that meddling of trans-regional countries in the region will only result in more antipathy towards them.
If such a move (possible attack on Syria) takes place, the Americans will surely suffer losses just like (their) interference in Iraq and Afghanistan, Ayatollah Khamenei said.
Such fire is like a spark in a powder keg, whose aftermath and ramification will be unclear, Ayatollah Khamenei pointed out.
The region is passing through sensitive and critical days, the Leader cautioned.
These warnings come as US President Barack Obama is trying to convince Congress to authorize military action in Syria.
Obama asked Congress to vote on the use of force after it became clear he would not win UN Security Council sanction given Russian opposition, after parliament in Britain voted against taking part, and as most US people are opposed to another military involvement that could have unpredictable outcomes.
