Official: UN/Arab League envoy on Syria heading to Russia to help G20 peace push

TEHRAN (FNA)- UN/Arab League special envoy on Syria Lakhdar Brahimi is heading to Russia to help UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's efforts at the G20 to organize a peace conference to end the conflict in the Muslim country, the UN said Thursday.

"The UN Secretary-General has just announced that Brahimi is on his way to Russia to help him push, on the margins of the G20 summit in Saint Petersburg, for the International Conference on Syria," the UN spokesperson said in a statement.

Brahimi is on his way to St. Petersburg to attend the G20 summit and assist in the soonest possible convocation of an international conference on Syria, the Geneva II, he quoted UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as saying, the Voice of Russia reported.

Ban said that a political solution was the only way to stop the bloodshed in Syria.

He also suggested more energetic promotion of the Geneva II conference at such a time when international attention was focused on threats related to chemical weapons in Syria.

Meanwhile, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said there were no plans to hold a separate meeting of the Russian president with Ban Ki-moon within the summit's framework.

As to the participation of Brahimi in the summit, he must be a member of the delegation led by the UN Secretary-General.

Peskov said at the same time, all the summit delegates will have an opportunity to speak with the Russian president on the sidelines of the summit.
