More than 800 people were killed in Iraq as a result of violence in the month of August, the United Nations mission in the country says.The UN said on Sunday that 807 people, including Iraqi civilians and security forces, had been killed in August. Another 2,000 people were reportedly injured in the same month.
According to the report, the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, witnessed the most deadly attacks during the month, with 317 deaths.
The report notes that a total of about 5,000 people have lost their lives since the start of the year.
On Sunday, an attack in the northern town of Tuz Khormato in Salahedin Province left at least two people dead and 15 others wounded. Thirteen people, mostly children, were killed and 18 others injured in two bomb blasts in the same city on August 29.
On Saturday, August 31, 12 people were killed in an attack in Baghdad.
A spate of car bombings and shootings killed at least 82 people on August 27. Most of the attacks targeted parking lots, outdoor markets and restaurants in Shia districts in and around Baghdad.
According to the United Nations, a total of 1,057 Iraqis, including 928 civilians, were killed and another 2,326 were wounded in terrorist attacks throughout the country in July -- the deadliest month in Iraq since 2008.
On July 30, Iraqs Interior Ministry accused militants of launching an open war in Iraq and attempting to push the Middle Eastern country into chaos.
