Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh says the Islamic Republic will export gas to Oman in the near future.Zanganeh made the remarks at a Sunday press conference after a meeting with Omani Oil Minister Mohammed bin Hamad Al Rumhy in the first round of negotiations between delegations from the two countries in Tehrans Sa'ad Abad Palace, the Oil Ministry's official news agency, SHANA, reported.
A good understanding was reached on Irans gas export to Oman and we will follow the next steps in the near future, said the Iranian oil minister.
Oman had earlier requested more than two billion cubic meters of Irans gas a day.
Earlier in the day, Omani ruler Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said arrived in Tehran at the head of a high-ranking delegation on a three-day official visit as the first head of state to visit Iran since President Hassan Rouhani took office on August 4, 2013.
Iran, which sits on the world's second largest natural gas reserves after Russia, has been trying to enhance its gas production by increasing foreign and domestic investment, especially in its South Pars Gas Field.
It is part of a joint gas field shared with Qatar, covering an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which are in Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf and known as the South Pars Gas Field. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers, the North Dome Gas Field, is situated in Qatar's territorial waters.
According to Irans Oil Ministry, Irans proved natural gas reserves are about 1,045.7 trillion cubic feet (29.61 trillion cubic meters) or about 15.8 percent of world's total reserves.
