Authorities in Tunisia seek to confiscate the entire amount of money embezzled by fugitive dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who fled to Saudi Arabia following the 2011 revolution in the North African country,Press TVreports.Ben Ali, who ruled Tunisia for more than two decades, allegedly embezzled billions of dinars, before escaping to Saudi Arabia.
The Tunisian government designated independent judges to confiscate the assets of the dictator and his families following his overthrow.
However, the Confiscation Committee has criticized a lack of cooperation from foreign countries.
As the president of the Confiscation Committee, I confirm that we have nearly confiscated all the assets of Ben Ali and his clans in Tunisia, but it is more complicated to operate abroad. The extradition of Ben Ali has been blocked by foreign countries. They are not ready to cooperate with Tunisian authorities, in fighting organized crimes, even if the criminal is the former president who fled the country, said Nejib Hnen.
According to some financial analysts, the misappropriated national wealth can stabilize the economy of the country.
The Emirates, Saudi Arabia and other foreign countries are financing the counter revolution in Tunisia; they would never accept to extradite Ben Ali and his clans. They are protecting individuals who are convicted by Tunisian courts for organized crimes, Abdelaziz Bousnina, a financial analyst, told Press TV.
