The Islamic Republic of Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have expressed hope for expanded bilateral relations under the new administration in Iran.In a phone conversation with his UAE counterpart Abdullah bin Zayed on Sunday, Irans Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi touched upon Tehran-Abu Dhabi cooperation in certain fields thanks to the decisions made by Iranian and Emirati officials, expressing hope that the two sides would remove remaining obstacles and pave the way for closer partnership.
Zayed, for his part, also expressed optimism that relations between Tehran and Abu Dhabi would further expand under the presidency of Irans new chief executive, Hassan Rouhani.
Rouhanis inauguration ceremony was held on August 4 in Irans Majlis with the participation of senior Iranian and foreign officials one day after he was endorsed by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in an official ceremony.
Rouhani won the June 14 presidential election with 50.7 percent of the votes. Turnout in the election was 72.7 percent.
The two foreign ministers also discussed the situation of Iranian nationals residing in the UAE and the recent developments in Egypt and Syria.
According to a report published by ISNA on July 6, over the recent months the UAE has revoked the residency permits of dozens of Iranians, some of whom had lived in the country for as long as 25 years, and forced them to leave the Arab country without providing any reason.
Irans Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araqchi said a day after the report was published that the Ministry and the Iranian Embassy in Abu Dhabi were seriously following up on the case.
He said a number of foreign nationals had been expelled from the UAE following a decision by the Emirati Interior Ministry to apply some changes to the Persian Gulf states population of foreign nationals.
