Iran Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has warned against the threat posed to international security and stability by extremist and terrorist currents.
For the world today, fighting terrorism is not a tactical issue but is a necessary and strategic one, Larijani said in a meeting with former European Union (EU) foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, in Tehran on Saturday.

He lashed out at certain regional countries and global powers for spreading terrorism and extremism and stated that the spread of extremist and terrorist groups will mainly inflict damage on European countries.

The Iranian Majlis speaker further stated that cooperation between Iran and European countries can create a new atmosphere in the region.
Cooperation between Iran and Europe on large-scale strategic issues of the region can serve the interests of both sides and allow new perspectives for the settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue, Larijani added.
He stressed the importance of taking steps to clear misunderstandings and stated, Suspension [of uranium enrichment] is a thing of the past and past models should not be used to resolve this issue. Rather, considering the new conditions, efforts should be made to resolve the [nuclear] issue within a new framework.

Solana, for his part, said misunderstandings surrounding Irans nuclear issue should be cleared by taking advantage of opportunities and new strategies, and going on with negotiations.

He said the upcoming Geneva 2 talks on Syria will be important and necessary and warned against the spillover of Syria unrest and instability to the entire region.

The former EU chief arrived in Tehran on Saturday to take part in the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian President Hassan Rohani as a special guest.
