The Iran Project : Niloufer Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi, the two journalists detained for 17 months after the unrest following Mehsa Amini's death, were released from prison on bail.
According to the Iran Project, the appeals court of Tehran province agreed to the IRR100,000,000 bail for each of the journalists, subsequently, both of them were released from prison after 17 months.
On 22 October 2023, the 15th branch of the Tehran Revolutionary Court issued its verdict after conducting court hearings, and investigations, obtaining the final defense, and considering the defense motions presented by the defendants' lawyers.
According to the verdict, Elaheh Mohammadi was sentenced to 6 years in prison on the charge of cooperating with the hostile government of the United States, 5 years in prison for conspiracy to commit a crime against the security of the country, and 1 year in prison on the charge of propagating activities against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Niloufar Hamedi was also sentenced to 7 years in prison on the charge of collaborating with the hostile government of the United States, 5 years in prison for conspiracy to commit crimes against the country's security, and 1 year in prison on the charge of propagandizing against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Also, according to the verdict issued, both defendants, as a supplementary punishment, were banned from membership in political parties, groups, and factions, and activities in cyber space, media, and press for 2 years.
According to the court decision, detention days will be deducted and calculated based on Article 27 of the Islamic Penal Code.
Moreover, the two journalists are prohibited from leaving the country until the appeal court’s decision is issued.
