The Iran Project - Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has arrived in Tehran with a high-ranking military delegation to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and counter-terrorism cooperation with senior Iranian officials.

The Tuesday trip was made in response to an invitation from Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Baqeri.

Heading a high-ranking military delegation, Shoigu was officially welcomed by Major General Baqeri.

During his visit, Shoigu is expected to meet with Baqeri and other senior commanders of Iran's Armed Forces to discuss advancing defense diplomacy, expanding cooperation, and addressing shared threats, particularly international terrorism.

Despite facing Western sanctions, Iran and Russia have deepened their relations in various fields, including military and defense.

Last month, Iran's domestically-manufactured Ababil ballistic missile was for the first time put on display at a military exhibition in Russia, alongside a range of other cutting-edge Iranian military equipment, including drones and electronic warfare systems.

The Iranian Defense Ministry also for the first time showcased a replica of its Tactical Sayayd air defense system in the Russian exhibition.

In August, Commander of the Iranian Army's Ground Force Brigadier General Kiomars Heidari visited Moscow to discuss cooperation between Iranian and Russian ground forces.
