Iran, Iraq officials discuss Arbaeen pilgrimage

Iran's Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi and his Iraqi counterpart Abdul Amir Al-Shammari have held talks on issues of mutual interests including the Arbaeen pilgrimage.

Iranian official, who has traveled to Iraq, has met with the Iraqi official at the Zurbatiyah border crossing to discuss security issues and fighting against terrorism, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported cited by the IRNA on Saturday.

INA announced that Iraqi Interior Minister talked with his Iranian counterpart at the Zarbatieh border crossing located in Wasit Governorate, Iraq.

During the meeting, issues related to joint security coordination, international border control, and preparation for hosting Iranian pilgrims on the Arbaeen pilgrimage are expected to be discussed.

On May 31, 2023, Iran, and Iraq interior ministers held a meeting in Tehran to discuss fighting terrorism.

Last year, the Iranian Red Crescent Society dispatched a total of 44,000 rescuers and medical staff to provide services for the Arbaeen pilgrims.

The Arbaeen pilgrimage, which is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Imam of Shia Muslims, and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Each year, a huge crowd of people flocks to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rituals.
