Iranian technicians bring Bushehr nuclear plant back on grid

Irans Bushehr nuclear power plant has been reconnected to the countrys electricity grid after a home-grown program of overhaul and refueling.

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) said on Wednesday that the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, located over 1,200 kilometers south of the capital Tehran on the Persian Gulf coast, had resumed supplying electricity to the national power grid two days earlier.

It said local experts, technicians, companies and contractors played a major role in the plants overhaul and refueling program that had started in mid-February.

The overhaul program included annual replacing of fuel rods and periodic inspections, said the AEOI.

Iran Grid Management Company (IGMC) also said in a Wednesday statement that Bushehr plant was supplying electricity to the national power grid at a full production capacity of 1 gigawatt per hour.

It said the output is enough to respond to electricity demand in a city of one million people in warm regions in south Iran.

Iran has plans to launch new reactors in Bushehr power plant to increase electricity output in the facility.

Authorities say the country needs to expand its nuclear power to respond to an increasing demand for electricity in household and manufacturing sectors.
