‘Free Syrian Army’ chief may visit US

The chief commander of the terrorist Free Syrian Army (FSA) may travel to the United States next week to ask Washington for swift weapons shipments to Takfiri militants operating in Syria.
US-based representatives of Syria’s foreign-backed opposition coalition said on Thursday that FSA chief of staff Salim Idriss is expected to go to New York for meetings at the United Nations headquarters. Idriss may also visit Washington.

The travel plan has been confirmed by a UN Security Council diplomat and Mariam Jalabi, with the so-called Syrian National Coalition. Other reports, however, indicate that the trip has not been fully confirmed.

The announcement comes as the Syrian army has managed to inflict major losses on foreign-sponsored militants in Syria, making a series of accomplishments in the fight against terrorists over the past few weeks.

On June 14, US President Barack Obama ordered his administration to provide Takfiris in Syria with weapons, which include assault rifles, shoulder-fired rocket-propelled grenades and anti-tank missiles. However, the plan faced objections from both Democrats and Republicans in Congress.

Many members of the US Congress remain deeply skeptical about White House plans for transferring weapons to the militants, while a number of others have been pressing for military aid to the Takfiris for months.

On June 20, four bipartisan US senators introduced a bill aimed at prohibiting the Obama administration from providing military assistance to the militants.

Chris Murphy, among the four, argued, “We should be extremely wary of allowing the United States to be drawn into a complicated proxy war that could mire our country for years at a potentially incalculable cost to US taxpayers and America’s reputation at home and abroad.”

Turmoil has gripped Syria since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
