The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman welcomed the UN special envoy's initiative to suspend military operations in Yemen for two months and allow the entry of ships carrying food and fuel and the partial reopening of Sanaa airport.


Hans Grundberg, the UN special envoy for Yemen, said that the National Salvation Government in Yemen and the Saudi-led coalition had responded positively to the UN proposal to establish a two-month ceasefire, which would take effect on April 2nd at 7 pm.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh expressed hope that the move would be the beginning of a complete lifting of the blockade and a permanent ceasefire, and a political solution to the Yemeni crisis.

Saudi Arabia, with the support of the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and several other countries, has launched a military invasion of Yemen since March 2015.

The outbreak of war by Saudi Arabia and its allies in Yemen has so far killed and injured hundreds of thousands of Yemenis and displaced 4 million.

Iran has been calling for an end to the Saudi-led war on Yemen. In April 2015, Iran presented a four-point plan to the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Based, in which Tehran proposed a ceasefire, ending the blockade on Yemen, providing humanitarian aid to the people, and establishing an inclusive national unity government.
