The Iranian ambassador to Damascus has underlined the need for the participation of all influential players in the region, in particular Iran, in the long-awaited Geneva 2 conference on Syria.
�The presence of Iran in the Geneva 2 conference will contribute to the settlement of the Syria crisis,� Mohammad-Reza Raouf-Sheibani said on Monday.
�If there is a desire for a political solution to the Syria crisis, it is essential that all influential sides in the region take part in the Geneva 2 meeting,� he added.
The Iranian envoy said that since the onset of the crisis in Syria more than two years ago, the Islamic Republic has constantly stressed the need for all-inclusive national talks and political solution to end the ongoing unrest in the Arab country.

Raouf-Sheibani blamed the Syrian opposition for causing delay in the holding of the Geneva conference, adding that the divided opposition feels weakened in the face of the Syrian Army.

He said the US-Russia differences about the participation of influential regional countries, especially Iran, in the conference is also to blame for the procrastination of the Geneva 2 meeting.

The ambassador went on to say that the balance of power in Syria is in favor of the Syrian Army and government, noting that the resistance of the Syrian people has helped strengthen the Army.

The unrest in Syria erupted over two years ago and many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

On May 7, Russia and the United States agreed in Moscow to convene an international conference on Syria, which will serve as a follow-up to an earlier Geneva meeting held in June 2012.

UN-Arab League Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said on June 7 that the event might be held in July. The talks had originally been planned to be held in June.

Iran has repeatedly expressed its opposition to any foreign intervention in Syria's internal affairs, stressing that inclusive dialog and national reconciliation as well as free elections are the keys to resolving the unrest in the Arab country.
