Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a phone conversation with his Armenian counterpart Ara Aivazian conferred on the latest developments in the region as well as avenues to further strengthen regional security and stability.

During the phone talk on Monday, the two top diplomats underlined the importance of reinvigoration of relations and holding talks at different levels.

They also exchanged views on the prospects of mutual cooperation to confront new regional challenges.

Zarif and Aivazian also underlined the two countries� preparedness to deepen close cooperation within bilateral and multilateral frameworks.

The Iranian foreign minister, for his part, extended his country�s condolences to the Armenian people over the victims of clashes in the Karabakh war.

In a relevant development earlier this month, Iranian and Armenian officials discussed energy cooperation, especially gas exports and the extension of a gas-for-electricity barter contract which was inked between the two countries in 2004.

Iran�s Deputy Oil Minister Amir Hossein Zamaninia held talks with the Armenian Deputy Energy Minister Hakob Vardanyan on Saturday on various energy issues, especially the prolongation of barter that was concluded by the two governments in 2004 for bartering gas with electricity.

"Discussions about some technical issues concerning gas export and gas-for-electricity barter were postponed to the near future, after which a long-term contract will be signed," Zamaninia said.

Vardanyan, for his part, said, "We have been negotiating for a year and a half on gas exports and the extension of the gas barter contract with Iran. Today�s talks were among the most constructive ones."

"The two delegations tried to take into account the mutual interests of the two countries," he added.

In 2004, Tehran and Yerevan signed a 20-year gas and electricity barter agreement, according to which Iran's exported gas will be used by power plants in Armenia. Iran, in return, will import electricity from Armenia.
