FNA - Iranian Prosecutor General Mohammad Jafar Montazeri in a letter to his Romanian counterpart Augustin Lazar called for rapid and serious investigations into the death of fugitive judge, Gholamreza Mansouri, in the European country.
"I demand you to order serious and comprehensive investigations into the cause of Mansouri's death given the importance of this issue and finding the reality and the responsibility that relevant judiciary officials and Interpol of Romania have had to protect and monitor the suspect," Motazeri said in his letter on Monday.
He also called for identification and prosecution of individuals possibly involved in Mansouri's death.
Montazeri asked Lazar to send him a complete report about the prosecution and judicial case and the incident which led to Mansouri's death via Iran's mission in Bucharest.
In a relevant development on Sunday, the Iranian foreign ministry summoned the Romanian ambassador to Tehran and in an official note called on the Romanian authorities to clarify the cause of death of Mansouri.
Official note was handed over to the Romanian ambassador by the Iranian foreign ministry's director-general for consular affairs.
Earlier this month, Iran confirmed that Mansouri who was accused of receiving bribe before fleeing the country, had been arrested by the Interpol in Romania.
During the meeting, the Iranian diplomat stressed the need to accelerate the process of conducting medical and legal investigations, clarifying the cause of death and transferring the body of the deceased to Iran.
During the meeting, the Romanian ambassador pointed out that after obtaining the opinion of the officials of his country in this regard, he will provide the results of the measures taken to Irans foreign ministry.
In relevant remarks on Friday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi called on Romania to pursue the cause of death of former judge Mansouri.
"The Romanian authorities should provide Iran with a report on the accurate cause of the fugitive Iranian judge's death," Mousavi said.
Officials have said that the judge, who has left the country, had received a bribe of 500,000 euros ($570,000).
In a video posted online on June 8, Mansouri didnt give details about his whereabouts, but said he would return to Iran as soon as travel restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic are eased.
