Iran, Russia discuss continuation of cooperation on Syria

Tasnim Irans Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin held talks about a range of issues, including the latest developments in crisis-hit Syria.

During the meeting in Moscow on Friday, Jalali and Vershinin exchanged views about the latest developments in the Middle East and other parts of the world.

Regarding Syria, the two diplomats reaffirmed the Iranian and Russian governments support for the Syrian Constitutional Committee in Geneva, Switzerland, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

They also emphasized the continued cooperation of the two countries in resolving the Syrian crisis in the context of the Astana process.

The first meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee was held on October 30, 2019, under the auspices of the United Nations in Geneva.

In recent days, tensions have escalated between Syria and Turkey in Idlib.

Turkeys defense ministry said Monday that seven Turkish soldiers and one Turkish civilian were killed in Idlib by Syrian army shelling.

In response, Turkish forces launched an operation that it said neutralized 76 Syrian soldiers.

On Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned of further action if Syrian troops did not retreat from Turkish observation posts in Idlib.
