Iran to legally pursue Intelsat media ban case at UN: Minister

Iranian minister of communications and information technology has censured the giant satellite services provider Intelsat over its latest decision to pull the plug on Iranian channels, stating that Tehran will take the case to the United Nations.
On Tuesday, Mohammad Hassan Nami described the recent move by the Luxembourg-based company as legally unjustified, saying that the measure violates international rules and regulations due to its contravention of the Statute of the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (ITSO).

The Washington-based ITSO, which has 149 member states, is an intergovernmental organization with the mission to ensure that Intelsat provides public telecommunications services, including voice, data and video, on a global and non-discriminatory basis.

Nami noted that Tehran plans to take the Intelsat case to the United Nations in a bid to stop such illegal actions from taking place in the future.

Intelsat recently stopped the broadcast of Iranian channels under the pretext of the US sanctions against head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) Ezzatollah Zarghami.

Press TV has learned that the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) - an agency of the US Treasury Department headed by an Ashkenazi Jew called Adam Szubin - is behind the pressure on Intelsat.

Press TV and other Iranian channels have come under an unprecedented wave of attacks by European governments and satellite companies since January 2012.

They have been taken off the air in several Western countries, including Britain, France, Germany and Spain.

European companies say they are abiding by anti-Iran sanctions. However, Michael Mann, the EU foreign policy chief's spokesman, has told Press TV that sanctions do not apply to media.

Media activists call the attacks on Iranian channels a campaign against free speech launched by the same European governments that preach freedom of expression.
