Iran will partake in Geneva meeting on Syria if invited: Salehi

Irans Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has expressed Irans preparedness to participate in the upcoming international Geneva conference on Syria.
If invited, we will definitely take part at the international Geneva conference on Syria, Salehi said at a Saturday joint press conference with his visiting Lebanese counterpart Adnan Mansour in Tehran.

On May 7, Russia and the United States agreed in Moscow to convene an international conference on Syria. The meeting is scheduled to be held on June 25 in Geneva and it will serve as a follow-up to an earlier Geneva meeting held in June 2012.
Salehi, however, noted, If a meeting is supposed to result in delivery of more arms to the mercenaries, prolongation of the Syrian crisis, and destruction of its (Syrias) infrastructure, we will not participate in that.
The Lebanese foreign minister, who arrived in Tehran on Saturday to discuss regional and bilateral issues with the Iranian officials, also warned against the ramifications of supporting the foreign-backed militants in Syria and the spillover of the crisis in Syria into Lebanon and the entire region.

I reiterate that sending weapons will not help Syrian interests or the countries in the region. Sending weapons means [the] continuation of violence, and that means [the] destruction of Syria and its integrity and it will also destroy the region, he added.

The Iranian and Lebanese foreign ministers rejected foreign intervention in Syria and underscored the importance of dialogue for resolving the crisis.

The crisis in Syria began in March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants fighting in Syria are foreign nationals.

The Iranian foreign minister also highlighted the longstanding relations between Iran and Lebanon.

Iran and Lebanon enjoy years of mutual ties. Bilateral political relations are at the best level now. This positive atmosphere should be used towards implementing all the agreements signed in the past. We both agreed to remove obstacles in the way of these agreements in different fields, Salehi said.
