Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta says Rome is keen to expand bilateral relations with Tehran and cooperate with the new Iranian President Hassan Rohani.Addressing a press conference on Thursday, the premier said his government is well aware of the importance of positive relations with the Islamic Republic and he will make every effort to improve bilateral ties.
Letta added that his country plans to cooperate with the new president of Iran with a strong will and determination.
The Italian premier also hailed the massive public participation in Irans 11th presidential election saying the election turnout confirmed role of Iranian people in forming the country's ancient civilization.
On Sunday, Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino said Italy trusts that with the new government of Iranian President Hassan Rowhani, it will be possible to work at developing bilateral relations and begin, without delay, a season of renewed comprehension and constructive dialogue between Iran and the international community.
In a message on Monday, Italian President Giorgio Napolitano extended his most sincere congratulations to Rohani and called for stronger relations between Rome and Tehran.
Nearly 50.5 million Iranians, including more than 1.6 million first-time voters, were eligible to participate in the June 14 presidential election. The Interior Ministry put the voter turnout at 72.7 percent.
Rohani won 50.7 percent of the vote to secure an outright victory.
