Iran to decide on attending Geneva II after details emerge: Araqchi

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araqchi says Tehran will decide on its presence in the Geneva II conference on Syria after the details of the event are announced.
After the plans, date and agenda of the international Geneva conference on Syria are established, the Islamic Republic of Iran will decide about participating in it, Araqchi said on Friday.

He further welcomed remarks by French President Francois Hollande and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who have both called for the presence of Iranian President-elect Hassan Rohani at the event.

The unrest in Syria erupted over two years ago and many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

On May 7, Russia and the United States agreed in Moscow to convene an international conference on Syria, which will serve as a follow-up to an earlier Geneva meeting held in June 2012.

Araqchi further said that Iran has not yet received an "official request" for its presence in the Geneva II conference.
Despite extensive consultation, no agenda, plan and date have been determined for the international Geneva confab yet, the Iranian spokesperson pointed out.
On June 17, Irans Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said the Islamic Republic has received a verbal invitation to attend the Geneva II Conference.

Iran has repeatedly expressed its opposition to any foreign intervention in Syria's internal affairs, stressing that inclusive dialog and national reconciliation as well as free elections are the keys to resolving the unrest in the Arab country.

Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants fighting in Syria are foreign nationals.
