IRNA Iranian Envoy to London Hamid Baeidinejad on Monday denounced Britain's approach toward the issue of Iranian-British citizen who is serving her time in Iran, describing it as an interventionist act.
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who worked for the Thomson Reuters Foundation, was arrested in Kerman in April 2016 with charges relating to national security; she has been sentenced to five years in prison.
'Intervention on part of a country for which this woman has conducted an espionage act and is in prison for the same reason is tantamount to meddling in Iran's internal affairs,' Baeidinejad told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) in an exclusive interview.
'Today I was summoned by the British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and he, expressing concern, especially asked me about the conditions of Mrs Zaghari and her decision to start a hunger strike,' he said.
'I told him that the dual nationals all considered to be Iranian nationals and are subject to civil rights,' Baeidinejad added.
'I further told Foreign Secretary Hunt that she, as an Iranian national, is serving her time enjoying like the past all her rights as well as all kinds of healthcare services.'
'I also stressed that the meddlesome act by London is not going to help her but it will provoke negative reactions among the Iranian public and officials against the British government.'
'The Iranian government rejects any such intervention on the side of the British government,' the Iranian diplomat said.
